Welcome to LL17 Linguistic Landscape

LL17 will be hosted by the University of Limerick, 4 - 6 June, 2026

CONFERENCE THEME
'Crisis'

Since its inaugural meeting in Tel Aviv in 2008, the annual Linguistic Landscape Workshop has become the leading international forum for interdisciplinary research on language in public space. Equally, the discipline of linguistic landscape has evolved through an expansion in range and scope of topics investigated under the multidiscplinary umbrella of linguistic landscape. Such is the extent of the diversification the discipline that it now finds itself a key crossroads moment, which gives rise to our conference theme ‘Crisis’.

“Crisis” invites scholars to explore how linguistic landscapes reflect, respond to, and are shaped by crises—whether political, environmental, economic, social, or epistemological.

In a world increasingly marked by instability and precarity, LL17 seeks to examine how public signage, visual texts, and spatial semiotics engage with crisis on a variety of levels.  We welcome contributions that interrogate:

  • The role of language in mediating or resisting crisis

  • Semiotic expressions of displacement, protest, and resilience

  • Landscapes of misinformation, surveillance, and control

  • Methodological innovations for researching crisis in public space

  • Decolonizing linguistic landscape

We warmly welcome submissions on other topics relevant to the field of Linguistic Landscape research.
